For Frequency Theatre: PLAYWRIGHT
I am a BA Drama student at the University of Essex and have had a keen interest in both reading and writing plays for as long as I can remember. I have been writing since I was little, and although my stories were nothing special in the beginning, I have maintained the joy of writing. I’ve only just started to see writing as becoming a future for myself.
I recently entered a competition within the University of Essex to submit a fifteen minute play on the theme of ‘memory’. The winning play would then go on to be directed and put on at the Lakeside Theatre on campus. My play, ‘Acorns and Glitter’ won the competition and was put on as part of an evening of new writing from many other writers such as Marina Warner, Jonathan Lichtenstein and Rebecca Prichard. The evening was a sell out and was attended by Chris Campbell, Nick Hern and Paul Sirett who all reportedly loved my piece. The play was received wonderfully and has opened many doors for me.
I also wrote and directed a physical theatre piece adapted from Carol Ann Duffy’s poem ‘The Devil’s Wife’ which is based on the story of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady. The piece was then performed by myself and Charlotte Christie (as seen in the film ‘Tamara Drew’). This was very well received and really gave me the fire to continue writing plays.
