Adrian Stokes

For Frequency Theatre: ACTOR

Adrian is an Associate Director of the Mercury Theatre and has been a part of the Mercury Theatre Company as an actor and director since it’s inception in 1998 appearing in The Duchess of Malfi, Happy Days, Coriolanus, Journey’s End, The Grapes of Wrath, The Winter’s Tale and Roots. He has directed Blue Sky State, Three Heads in the Well, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Caretaker, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and Look at Me.

Following his professional debut in Henry IV at the High Street Rep here in Colchester, he has worked both as a director and actor for over 40 years. He worked for several years with Brian Way’s Theatre Centre and his subsequent experience includes the West End, where he appeared in Pinter’s production of Otherwise Engaged by Simon Gray, Regional Theatres and small scale touring. He spent ten years at Pit Prop Theatre, before joining the Mercury Theatre in 1994, creating and developing the theatre’s extensive community and education programme. Another aspect of his work has been the development of new plays. Adrian has directed the work of playwrights in residence, Claire Luckham (Auntie Karr’s Frocks), Rod Wooden (Leviathan) and Anna Reynolds (Deep Joy), and has also regularly directed work for Dis:Play and the Mercury Youth Theatres.

Television work includes Rutland Weekend Television (LWT) and In Suspicious Circumstance (Thames).
